Research Student Opportunities
I am particularly interested in having one or more PhD students in the area of Earth Climate Thermodynamics. Such a student should have a very strong academic track record, be highly motivated, be capable of writing clear and concise technical reports and publication-quality journal articles, be strong in the area of mathematics and have an excellent knowledge of engineering thermodynamics. The research would involve the development and validation of detailed simulation models for the thermodynamic processes of the Earth’s climate.
From August 2010 until 15 September 2010 (application deadline), the best opportunity for any strong potential PhD research student who wishes to work with me is the DIT Fiosraigh Scholarship Programme 2010—Dean of Graduate Students Award.
From December 2010 until early February 2011, the best opportunity for any strong potential PhD research student who wishes to work with me is the IRCSET EMBARK Initiative.
IRCSET’s EMBARK Initiative PhD Research Scholarships
The pre call announcement for the 2011 competition is likely to open in December 2010. The closing date for on-line applications is likely to be early in February 2011. The research would commence in September 2011.
Prof. Jim McGovern would be happy to discuss possible research areas with well-qualified applicants, with a view to the applicants specifying Prof. McGovern as their proposed supervisor and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Dublin Institute of Technology as the proposed research location.
Potential applicants who are interested in working with Prof. Jim McGovern and who wish to do research in an area that is also of interest to him are urged to make contact with him. Generally an applicant should have or expect to obtain a 1st class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely-related discipline.
Some research areas that are of interest to Prof. Jim McGovern are:
- Earth Climate Thermodynamics
- Stirling Engines
- Micro CHP
- Symmetry Engineering
- Second Law analysis through simulation
